Wildlife Photography Tour - Bharatpur

Welcome to India’s most famous avifauna sanctuary in Bharatpur, Rajasthan. Initially this place was famous as Bharatpur Bird sanctuary. Now this is more known as Keoladeo National park or Keoladeo Ghana National Park. Keoladeo is name derived from old temple of lord shiva & Ghana means thick forest.

Keoladeo is best example of man-made , man-managed wet-land & National park. Initially the place was used for waterfowl hunting ground. The total area of the park is only 29 sq.km but for nature lovers & wild-lifers & for Photographers it is a boon. One can see the mix type vegetation comprising of dry grasslands, woodlands, woodland swamps and wetlands. In all different types of habitats 366 species of birds, 379 flowers plant, 50 species of fish, 13 species of snake, 05 species of lizards, 07 amphibians and 07 turtles species are noted so far.

Migratory birds at Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary include several species of Cranes, Pelicans, Geese, Ducks, Eagles, Hawks, Shanks, Stints, Wagtails, Warblers, Wheatears, Flycatchers, Buntings, Larks and Pipits, etc. It is mainly known for migrated Siberian cranes.

From Agra it is 55 kms on Agra- Jaipur Highway, 200 kms from Jaipur & Delhi. The nearest rail station is Bharatpur ( 04 kms) & nearest Airport is Agra.

The best time from birding & photography point of view is November to March.

How To Reach:

FLIGHT: Nearest airport to reach this bird sanctuary is Agra about 54 kms from Bharatpur and New Delhi about 184 kilometers away. Daily flights are available to Agra from major cities like Delhi, Jaipur, Mumbai, Varanasi, and Lucknow.

TRAIN: Bharatpur Junction located 5 kms away from the national park is the neareast rail head. Reaching Bharatpur by train is easy as there are many trains that ply from New Delhi, Mumbai. Being on the main line, regular train service is available from Mathura, Sawai Madhopur and Kota on this route.

ROADWAYS: Bharatpur is well connected by road with Agra, Mathura, Delhi and Jaipur. Regular bus service is available to reach Keoladeo Ghana National Park from all major cities of India. The road distances from important places to Bharatpur are:

Delhi to Bharatpur-184 Km

Mathur to Bharatpur-39 Km

Agra to Bharatpur-54 Km

Jaipur to Bharatpur-176km

After reaching Bharatpur coordinate with the team for pickup.

Itinerary:

Day-1:

We will reach The Birder’s Inn resort at 1:00PM for check-in and at 2:30PM we will proceed for 1st Safari session on Rikshaw or Cycle as per individual preference. On your first safari session, you should be exploring the entire area for photography. You will have endless opportunities to capture your memorable photographs. We will have local guide with expert knowledge on birds and also arrange on field training session for tips and tricks for birds’ photography. We will be back to resort in evening and have evening tea/coffee with group session to review our work and also discuss plan for next day sessions.

Day-2:

We will start our day very early as park opens at 6:00AM and we will proceed for 2nd Safari session. Bharatpur Birds Sanctuary known as ‘birds paradise’ and a boon for Birds Photographer. In all different types of habitats 366 species of birds, 379 flowers plant, 50 species of fish, 13 species of snake, 05 species of lizards, 07 amphibians and 07 turtles species are noted so far. We will have our lunch packed by resort staff in hygienic condition and we will have lunch at 1:30PM in canteen with open sitting inside the park. After lunch we will have group discussion on technical problems during session and then proceed for 3rd Safari session. We will utilize our final session in evening time for birds photography with sunset at Bharatpur and we will conclude our tour after this session at 5:00PM.

DAY 3

We will go for morning 4th Safari session on final day. Back to hotel for breakfast. Take some rest. Freshen-up quickly at hotel. We will conclude the tour and leave to our destination with amazing memorable moments.

Things to carry:

Telephoto lenses – preferably above 300mm

Carry fully charged batteries for your camera.

Carry battery charger. Carry extra pack of camera batteries.

Carry backup memory cards / HDD storage drives, Laptop.

Carry a tripod to stabilize your gears while shooting from distance.

Carry good sun glasses to protect your eyes from heat.

Sun screens (above SPF 30) are very important.

It is advisable to carry basic first aid along with you.

Carry a pair of good binoculars (optional).

Learnings from this tour:

On field learning from the experts is the best methods of improving your skillsets. I will hand hold you at every possible step for a better understanding of perspectives, camera controls and how to make use of the best opportunities to get best possible images.

How to approach Wildlife in the field

Working with different modes of shooting (Av/A, Tv/S, M and P)

Exposure control in difficult light conditions

Metering techniques (matrix/evaluative, Spot, partial, center weighted)

Mastering auto-focus, focusing points, locking AF and focus tracking for moving subjects

How to get sharp images of moving subjects

Framing and composition in the field

Ethics in Wildlife Photography

Please keep in mind that sighting of a bird or a good photography opportunity to capture it in an ideal frame is a matter of luck. Though the possibility of sighting is high but it can never be guaranteed in the wildlife.
